The British Virgin Islands have a subtropical climate as they are located so close to the equator. Temperatures generally average about 26°C in winter (December until March) and 28°C in the summer (June through August), with cooler temperatures at night.
Overall the weather is warm and dry with about 8 hours of sunshine each day. There is usually less than 50 inches of rain each year, with brief yet intense showers from July to November. The BVIs are cooled by gentle trade winds throughout the year, while hurricane season is short and peaks generally in September.
The tourist high season is from mid-December to mid-April as these are the driest months. Just outside of this peak season is also a great time to travel as it can be more affordable and the weather is still comfortable.
BVI Spring Regatta (late March/early April): This annual event takes place over the course of a week and is firmly established in the Caribbean Yachting Calendar. The BVI's are undoubtedly one of the best cruising grounds in the world and the prospect of a little competition and accompanying apres-sailing parties, create the perfect ingredients for a superb regatta. There is plenty of scope for bareboats to join in the fun.
Spanish Town Fisherman’s Jamboree (late March/early April): An event on Virgin Gorda which celebrates fishing, featuring fishing competitions accompanied by music and seafood feasts.
Emancipation Festival (August): A carnival which celebrates the emancipation of the slaves in the 1800s, showcasing the culture and history of the island with extravagant parades, musical performances and food fairs.
BVI Food Fete (November): A celebration of British Virgin Islands cuisine, with a series of events taking place over the course of the month. These include ‘Taste of the BVI’ events on Tortola and Virgin Gorda, each featuring cookery demonstrations, mixology competitions and live music. The Anegada Lobster Festival is perfect for those who love lobster, a two day culinary festival which takes place on the coral island of Anegada and allows visitors to sample excellent dishes created by talented local chefs.
