Grenada : When to go

Climate

Grenada is an ideal holiday destination all year round thanks to its tropical climate. The temperature is fairly constant in winter and summer about 28°C, with high season falling between January and April when it is much colder in North America.

The average amount of sun ranges from 6 to 8 hours per day. Warm temperatures are tempered by the northeasterly tradewinds, usually force 2 to 4 but less reliable in summer and occasionally rising to force 5 or more in winter.

There are reasonably frequent showers in the summer months, although these usually last less than 10 minutes. Hurricanes are a possibility at this time of year but Grenada is rarely hit by tropical storms as it is at the southern end of the hurricane belt.

There is plenty to do in Grenada at all times of year even if there is some rain.

Events

Grenada Sailing Week (late January-early February): A number of sailing races take place over the course of a week, making the most of the excellent conditions with accompanying on-shore events. This preceded by a work boat regatta where local communities compete in races of traditional sailing boats.

Pure Grenada Music Festival (April/May): A three day festival which was held for the first time in 2016, featuring local bands alongside international artists which have included Joss Stone.

Grenada Chocolate Festival (May): An annual event in Grenada where visitors can learn about cocoa and chocolate production. The festival includes fun experiences such as visits to cocoa plantations, hands-on chocolate making workshops and plenty of opportunities to sample chocolate and cocoa-inspired cuisine.

Fisherman’s Birthday Celebration (29 June): Held in the fishing town of Gouyave in honour of St Peter, the patron saint of fishermen, the festival features a sailing race, a mini carnival, fireworks and a blessing of the local fishing fleet.

Grenada Carnival (July - August): Known as ‘Spicemas’ Festival, the carnival take place over the course of two weeks and features performances by steel pan bands, beauty pageants and parades.
